As machines become capable of thinking, writing, and creating, the question of what is distinctively human becomes both more urgent and more interesting.
The Question Sharpens
For most of human history, our cognitive abilities marked us clearly apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. Language. Abstract reasoning. Planning. Tool use. Art. Morality. We built our sense of specialness — as individuals, as a species — on the uniqueness of these capacities.
Then we started building machines that could do them too.
This is genuinely disorienting. Not because AI "is just math" and therefore doesn't count — after all, so are the neural signals that produce human thought. Not because AI lacks consciousness — we don't have a good theory of what consciousness is or how to detect it. But because the neat categories we used to demarcate human cognition are suddenly permeable in ways they weren't before.
The Commoditisation of Capability
Here is one frame: AI is commoditising certain cognitive capabilities. Text generation, code synthesis, image creation, translation, pattern recognition — these are becoming cheap, abundant, and available at scale.
When a capability is commoditised, its value falls. This has happened to many forms of physical and intellectual labour throughout history. It is happening now to a new category.
The question is: what remains non-commoditised? What remains distinctively, irreducibly human?
Some Candidates
Embodied experience: AI systems process information; humans live lives. The grief of losing a parent, the texture of physical exhaustion, the specific joy of cooking for people you love — these are forms of experience that don't have AI equivalents, and the wisdom they generate is not transferable through text.
Genuine preference and desire: AI systems optimise for objectives; humans want things. This distinction may blur as AI systems become more complex, but at present there is a difference between a system trained to maximise a reward signal and a being that actually, genuinely wants things for reasons rooted in a life lived.
Moral responsibility and agency: We hold humans morally responsible in ways we don't hold tools. This is partly a legal and social convention, but it reflects something real: humans make choices from a position of genuine agency in a way that current AI systems do not. Moral weight requires something like moral standing.
Relationship and presence: What we give each other in deep relationships — genuine attention, care that persists over time, the specific quality of being truly known by another person — is not replicable by a machine optimised for user satisfaction. The difference is not just technological; it is ontological.
What This Isn't
This is not a defence of human exceptionalism in the cosmic sense. We are animals — remarkable ones, but animals. We are not outside nature. We are not the apex of some teleological process. The universe does not care about us.
And this is not a case for AI pessimism. The commoditisation of cognitive capabilities is, on balance, likely to be good — freeing human attention for the things that remain non-commoditised, reducing the cost of intelligence, expanding access to expertise.
The Invitation
What the AI moment offers is an invitation to think more carefully about what we actually value in human experience and human contribution. Not "what tasks can humans do that machines can't?" but "what is it about being human that we care about, quite apart from capability?"
The answer, I suspect, will turn out to be relational, embodied, and particular. Not general intelligence, but specific presence. Not information, but meaning. Not capability, but care.
These are not things that can be optimised away. They may, however, be neglected — by individuals who mistake the simulation for the thing, by institutions that mistake efficiency for value, by a culture too dazzled by what machines can do to notice what they cannot.
Staying human in the age of AI is not a technical problem. It is a philosophical and ethical one. And it begins, as all good problems do, with paying attention.
